MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES
Personal Counseling Services
Personal counseling services are provided to help individuals develop self-awareness, recognize alternatives, and feel empowered to take charge of their lives.
Students typically explore such issues as personal growth and well-being, relationship problems, social and sexual struggles, self-esteem enhancement, academic difficulties, eating disorders, major life decisions, grief, depression and anxiety.
A student requesting mental health services is entitled to an assessment session with one of the licensed counselors on staff. In this session the student and counselor work together to decide on the best plan for the student. This could be a few sessions of counseling from the Personal Counseling Center located at the Student Health & Wellness Center, or perhaps a referral to a community counselor for longer-term counseling or a referral to another student service on campus.
In order to help build a healthy campus environment, counselors do outreach to student services and academic departments. Students, faculty and staff are informed about what constitutes good mental health, about the signs of mental health concerns, and what to do when questions occur. Counseling services include:
- Individual counseling
- Couple's counseling
- Crisis services
- Suicide prevention services
- Referrals to community resources
- Referrals to campus resources
- Presentations to student groups, faculty and staff
- Trainings for student workers and leaders, faculty and staff
Counseling staff are professional mental health providers including Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), and Family and Marriage Therapist (FMT).
A part-time licensed psychiatric nurse practitioner is available to provide mental health evaluations and when appropriate pharmacological treatment. Visits incur a minimal fee placed directly to the student account. Care coordination with community providers can be provided.
The SHWC does not provide psychological testing as needed for attention deficit disorder. Providers within the SHWC are familiar with community providers who will work with students on the cost of psychological testing.
Mental Health Care Within Primary Medical Care
Our physicians and family nurse practitioners can diagnosis and treat depression and anxiety within the appropriate scope of primary medical care. Referrals may be made to the psychiatric nurse practitioner to further evaluation and assessment of the best pharmacological treatment.
